Napoleonic British 11th (Light) Dragoon Regiment

Last night I completed the second half of this regiment that I had started many years ago.  The first half was done back in the early Spring so I could use them in my Battle of Plancenoit convention game.

The 11th British (Light) Dragoon Regiment



These are very early Miniature Figurines (MiniFigs) with the saddle and horse blanket molded to the rider.  They'll join my small British expeditionary force for the 1813 Befreiungskrieg campaigning as part of the Armeeabteilung Walmoden in northern Germany but they may make it a little further south and find themselves ensnared in the actions of the Army of the North, especially with the Prussian III Korps.

Prussian Brandeburg Uhlans

As part of the preparation for my Plancenoit Waterloo game earlier this month, I completed one last Prussian unit, the Brandenburg Uhlans (Uhlan Regiment Nr. 3), which was in 1813 assigned to the cavalry reserve of I Korps in the Army of Silesia.

The figures are Miniature Figurines (Mini Figs) with a mix of kollet and litewka uniforms.  The bases are from Litko and are 2" x 2" x 8mm.

 

According to the various references I consulted, the officers carried a white varnished lance.  Sometime in 1813 that distinction was eliminated but I think it makes the "command" stand more apparent so I kept it.  I still have to do the lance pennants.



French Chevau-Legers Lanciers

As the final preparation for my play test of a Napoleonic game at our regional convention, Bayou Wars, next month, I completed two regiments of French cavalry.  Both of these regiments are chevau-legers lanciers, six of which were raised from dragoon regiments by the decree of July 15, 1811.

Both of these regiments are primarily vintage Scruby Miniatures and its follow-on manufacturer, Historifigs.  There may be a few Warrior Miniatures in the 6th Regiment.

 

They are each brigaded with a hussar regiment in two light cavalry brigades that are part of my French reserve cavalry.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



Prussian Napoleonic Cavalry

It has been a while since I've posted anything here.  I have been painting figures and vehicles but they are for a special project that is not yet ready to be unveiled.  Heh, heh!

But in preparation for a bicentennial battle commemorating the Befreiungskrieg ("Prussian War of Liberation), I needed a couple of more Prussian cavalry regiments.  Luckily I had two regiments that were bought almost completely painted.  Of the sixteen figures I only had to paint two from scratch, while I did some major and minor repainting of the other fourteen.

So without much else ado, I present two light cavalry regiments of the cavalry reserve, III (Prussiche) Korps, Army of the North.

All of the riders and horses are vintage Hinchliffe.  I still need to figure out a way to arm the Pomeranians with lances, but that came happen later.  Right now it is back to the "Special Project."

Final Painting of 2012

Yesterday I completed a small batch of disparate figures that had been sitting around my painting desk for far too long.

First some Miniature Figurines American Revolutionary War figures:

An American general, using the MiniFig General Washington figure, painted from scratch.





And a Hessian general, using the same figure.  This was a repaint of a previously painted figure that I purchased.



New figures for Bland's Dragoons (American).  I previously had inherited a unit of nine of these from my friend Doc Ord.  With the acquisition of three more, they are now part of a six stand regiment.  The newly painted figures are the officer on the front stand and two of the four figures on the back stands plus three of those four horses.  I think I did a fairly decent job of matching Doc's paint job.

And the whole regiment together.  They will be used to help oppose my British cavalry - 17th Light Dragoons, Queen's Rangers, and the Loyalist York Dragoons (an "made-up" designation).

An Old Glory Darkest Africa figure:

This is the leader from the Old Glory bearers set.  I needed a senior leader for my Zanzabari units and he seemed to fit the bill perfectly.  He is a slightly taller figure than the rest of my Zanzabari so he'll stand out as their leader.



My Chinese Back of Beyond forces needed some additional leaders so I added the Pulp Figures PYG-14 Chun King warlord command pack.

The warlord in the center and the standard bearer will lead the entire Chinese force.  The two figures on each end will join one of his warlord infantry units to replace some leader figures who are getting promoted.  The bald-headed guy in khaki will lead my German uniformed Chinese forces.  He's armed with a submachinegun and looks rather nasty so he'll be a good guy to keep them in check.  The basing details correspond to the units that are already done to which these guys will be added.

And my early 20th Century "Pulp" forces got some additional stalwarts to increase the strength of the "Knights of the Cresent Moon."

To make a fairly heavily armed band to help protect the treasures of the Near East from those ravenous "tomb raiders" who plague that part of the world.



And finally, Bob Murch's Pulp Figures of "The Sergeants Three and Gunga Din."

Those three brave and rogueish sergeants plus the bugle tooting Gunga Din.  The bases aren't completed yet but they are ready for adventures.



Sachsen-Wachsenstein Dragoons

Using a small batch of Miniature Figures Russian SYW cavalry, I've completed the Sachsen-Wachsenstein Horse Regiment by adding a squadron of 12 dragoons.  Along with the heavy horse and horse grenadier squadrons, these three squadrons make up the cavalry component of the small army of Sachsen-Wachsenstein.

The figures are actually Russian horse grenadiers but they are so similar to one of the Saxon dragoon regiments that I saw no difficulty in using them for Sachsen-Wachsenstein, a stalwart ally of the Imperium.  Their uniform is patterned after the Saxon Bruhl Dragoon Regiment.

Their addition now gives me five squadrons of battlefield cavalry for the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen.

1st King's Dragoon Guards

The 1st King's Dragoon Guards joined the Electorishe Armee Thueringen late Friday evening after a forced march.  They got their baptism of fire at the Battle of Hesselbach (battle report to follow on the Jackson Gamers blog - see link at lower left).  This 12-figure squadron are Dixon Miniatures.  These particular figures do not have the "pumpkin heads" that some other Dixons do.

The King's colours are from the Kronoskaf SYW Project web site.

Colonel Bland, the regimental commander, leads the squadron in its evolutions.

These were nice figures to paint, with the details being well defined but not, to my eye, too exaggerated.

Sachsen-Wachsenstein Horse Grenadiers

Well I got on a tear over last weekend and started on the Horse Grenadier squadron for the Sachsen-Wachsenstein cavalry regiment.  And they have now been completed!

These are Miniature Figurines "true" 25mm Seven Years War Austrian horse grenadier figures.  The squadron has twelve figures - two officers, two buglers, one ensign ("converted" from a regular horse grenadier), and seven horse grenadiers.

They will be deployed with the Heavy Horse squadron (most recent post before this one) and a to-be-painted dragoon squadron.

I've also started work today (a day off from my regular job) on the 1st Squadron, 1st King's Dragoon Guards of the Britannian army.  I must finish them by Thursday (tomorrow) evening so they can participate in this Saturday's SYW Imagi-Nation game between the Electorische Armee Thueringen and the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen.

Sachsen-Wachsenstein Heavy Horse

The first squadron of the Sachsen-Wachsenstein Cavalry Regiment has been completed and has joined the ranks of the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen.  Composed of a mix of Miniature Figurines Seven Years War French command figures and Austrian cuirassier troopers, the squadron is uniformed in golden yellow coats with medium blue cuffs, lapels, and turnbacks.  The buglers wear reversed colors.  The regimental commander is Colonel Hans von Schlichternburg.

They will get their battle inauguration later this month in a fight between the Electorische Armee Thuringen and the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen, where they will be brigaded with the Courland Dragoon Squadrons Constantine and Mavromichalis.

The Horse Grenadier Squadron is just starting to be equipped and will probably not be ready in time for the coming campaign.  There is also a Dragoon Squadron planned for the regiment.

3rd Squadron, Hapnich Dragoons (Carpania)

The final squadron of the Carpanian Dragoon Regiment Hapnich has finally been completed.  Their uniform is a copy of the Prussian 10th Dragoon Regiment.  They are Old Glory figures.

The second image uses the new background that I acquired at Bayou Wars last month.  It was an insert in a prepainted 28mm building I bought from Bobe's Hobby Shop.  I think it gives the picture a little more realism than the plain blue background I have been using.

In June I also started painting on the first of three squadrons of heavy cavalry for the Duchy of Sachsen-Wachsenstein, using a mix of Austrian and Russian SYW figures from Miniature Figurines.  Pictures will be posted soon.

Finally I also began work on some Europeans and natives for my Darkest Africa forces, getting ready to run a game in early November in the inaugural Colonial Barracks convention in New Orleans.  This will be an all The Sword and the Flame rules Victorian era Colonial gaming convention.  See Larry Brom's webstore, Sergeants3, for more details.

Two New Officers

I just added two new officers to my imagi-nation forces.

Marechal-de-Camp Francois Lucien, Comte de Merlot, Commander of the Gallian expeditionary corps to the Imperium's Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen.

He is an Old Glory French and Indian War mounted French officer that I purchased as part of an e-Bay lot.

Oberstleutnant Freiherr Hans von Stuppe is the commander of the Carpanian von Stuppe Hussar Regiment.  His uniform is based on the Germanian 8th (later 7th) Hussar Regiment, the "Canaries."  He is the older son of General der Infanterie Baron Rolfe von Stuppe, commander of the Carpanian army.

He is a Front Rank figure, Prussian hussar officer in mirleton.

Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Bland

The last figure completed in December 2009 (and in fact the last in 2009) is Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Bland, commander of the 1st King's Dragoon Guards.  Bland is a Dixon dragoon officer who will (eventually) lead three squadrons of the 1st KDG, although all that I have on-hand now is a single squadron, still unpainted.

Bland is a real person, the nephew and heir of Lieutenant General Humphrey Bland, colonel of the 1st KDG.  Although I don't think Thomas Bland was ever in the 1st KDG, he will be for my imagi-nation purposes.

He is painted as close to the uniform of the 1st KDG that I could get.  the only thing that I wasn't able to paint was the red and blue rolled blanket roll on the rear of the saddle and the blue line in the center of the gold trim on the saddle cloth and holsters.

He will also initially command my Brittanian forces as they battle the Gallians and Imperialists both in Europa and in and around the Capitania General de la Florida in the southeast of the Brittanian colonies in the New World.

Royal Aooghastan Cavalry

Although not finished in time for the 2nd play test of the Assault on Fort Khalaam, this troop of cavalry will join forces with the Haddabiera tribe on Saturday at my Bayou Wars convention game.


Consisting of 12 Lyzard Grin Sikh cavalry, this troop of the Royal Aooghastan cavalry presents a formidable appearance. Armed with a mix of swords and carbines, the unit is patterned after Royal Afghanistan cavalry portrayed in the Osprey North West Frontier: 1837-1947 book. They are dressed in dark cherry red tunics, charcoal black trousers, and black boots and head dresses. I also tried to simulate a bamboo standard pole by painting darker brown rings. For a first try, it looks OK.

But will their dashing appearance also mean they will do well on the miniature battlefield? We'll find out on Saturday.

Suspected Spencer Smith Plastic Figures

As part of the artillery and commander lots mentioned in the previous post, my seller included two painted, mounted officers (front center of below photo) that he identified as Spencer Smith figures.

He also included one gun, one howitzer, 15 gunners (in three poses), and 4 cavalrymen, examples of which are shown here. I am presuming that these are also Spencer Smith plastic figures. Confirmation from the learned readers would be appreciated.
