First Spanish Battalion

Some time ago, I purchased a dozen Spanish militia from The London Warroom to use in our pirate period battles. These figures were quickly painted and have served well in several battles.

But with my growing involvement in the world of 18th Century imagi-nation gaming, I've expanded my collection of Spanish infantry (and cavalry). Just this past week I completed another 12 figures to make my first Spanish battalion. Even though Spain had little part in the grand maneuvers in western and central Germania in our imaginary Europa, these forces will find their use as part of the Imperial troops, a kind of a holdover from the "Spanish Road" period. As usual, please click on the photos for a larger version.

Composed now of 24 figures, two officers, two ensigns, two sergeants, two drummers, and sixteen other ranks, this battalion will get its baptism of fire in my coming "Big Battalion" game on September 19th, where they will represent a portion of the contingent from the Reichskreis Obere Sachsen in the Imperium's Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere Sachsen, along with three "drafted" American Revolution Continental battalions.

The right "grand division" of the battalion.

The left "grand division" of the battalion.

The flags are courtesy of the Warflag web site. The figures were painted entirely with acrylic craft paints, sealed with straight Future, washed with Ace brand walnut wood stain, and varnished with Delta Ceramcoat matte interior varnish. They are individually mounted on 3/4" steel bases which are in turn mounted on balsa wood movement stands capped with magnetic business card backing.

In case you try to find which were painted several years ago and which were done last week, even I can't tell with the other ranks! The two officers were painted several years ago and the ensigns, sergeants, and drummers were painted last week.

  1. Very nice! I like the colors. :)
There's certainly no reason Spanish (or some facsimile therof) can't appear in ImagiNationary Central Urope.

  2. Well, what can I say? "The more Habsburg troops the merrier" perhaps?

Good-looking fellows. They should give a good account of themselves on the table top.
